Yardworks recently teamed up with The University of Glasgow and pioneering Italian graffiti artist, Peeta, to create an epic mural to mark the opening of a new state-of-the-art learning hub.
The new mural is the result of a mini competition which was undertaken by the Development Board of the JMSLH project. Supported by the team at SWG3, artists from all over the globe were invited to submit their own concepts. Peeta’s unmatched expertise in anamorphism meant he was ultimately chosen to deliver the final piece out of what was an extraordinarily high calibre of submissions.
The latest work is a Scottish first for the internationally-celebrated street artist and features in the University of Glasgow’s James McCune Smith Learning Hub (JMSLH), their new transformational educational facility at the heart of the historic campus.
Through its celebrated arts programme, SWG3 has been involved in installing various works in and around the university campus, and various artists from the Yardworks project now adorn the library walls, stairwells and, most recently, the winter garden of the JMSLH - with future designs already in the pipeline.
After three years of construction, the new JMSLH opened its doors earlier this year on University Avenue in Glasgow’s West End. The first building in the University’s £1bn Campus Development Programme, the five storey technology-enhanced learning and teaching facility has capacity for over 2,500 students and boasts multiple active learning spaces, cafes and social areas. The 13m x 8m mural, which features on the inside of the building’s glass façade, has been planned since 2019. Although the pandemic delayed the project, SWG3 and The University of Glasgow are delighted to finally unveil Peeta’s latest creation.
The Peeta mural joins other artwork in the building delivered in collaboration SWG3 from the Cobolt Collective and Vanessa Lawrence - all adding to the very unique experience for University of Glasgow students, staff and visitors.
