GLASGOW SCHOOL OF ART GRADUATE BALDVIN RINGSTED BRINGS HIS BOLD AND HYPNOTIC PAINTINGS TO THE SWG3 ACID BAR

Rhythm Distortions is a new exhibition of found and re-worked paintings by the multi-disciplinary Glasgow-based artist Baldvin Ringsted.

Exploring the connections between the things we hear, and the things we see - between the things we perform, and the things we experience - Baldvin Ringsted works almost as a translator. Sometimes, it's transforming sound and music into visual and physical things - painting, collage, sculpture, installation, video. Sometimes it's the reverse, using an idea or an object as the inspiration for a new audio work.

One inspiration is the sounds and styles of the musical influences that formed part of his daily life and identity as a teenager, growing up in rural Iceland in the 80s and 90s (think American east coast trash metal and Tampa Bay death metal). Now, working as a visual artist, he explores these ideas of remembered sounds, and the ideas and images they spark; one previous example, performed live in New York, Berlin, Glasgow and Akyreyri, explored Martin Luther King’s famous speech, translated into the voice of a cello. Born in Iceland, Baldvin graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2007.

His work has been shown at festivals including Glasgow International and at spaces including New York’s Martos Gallery, Iceland’s Akureyri Art Museum, and Glasgow’s CCA. He currently lives and works in Glasgow.

Rhythm Distortions is on display in the Acid Bar from 11 March to Friday 10 April (Monday to Friday, 10am - 6pm, free entry).
