English rapper Speech Debelle headlines The Poetry Club on Sunday 15 October 2023.
Born in South-London and raised in a traditional Jamaican household, Speech Debelle, aka Corynne Elliot, began writing poetry at a young age and was keen on the idea of translating her poems to song – however, she was unhappy with her singing voice, which led to her deciding that she would rap instead.
Realising that her rapping was a great emotional outlet, she decided to focus on her art, and in 2009 she released her debut album Speech Therapy. The album was instantly picked up by media outlets and it was praised for it's honest lyricism, and unique production. It proved so popular amongst critics that Debelle toppled artists such as Florence and The Machine to win the Mercury Prize for her debut effort. Since then, Debelle has gone on to release two more studio albums, and her fourth effort Sunday Dinner on a Monday is due to be released in 2023.
This event is strictly 14+. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over. One adult can attend with a maximum of two Under 16s.
